Brain Fog Workshop

Description: 8 session workshop – improve the way you think by enhancing, your memory, planning, organization and word finding abilities. All this and more is covered in the 8 session cognitive workshop. Participants will be asked to make a commitment to attend all of the sessions. Existing wait list will be called initially.

Do It With Ease

Description: An exercise program designed to help regain and maintain range of motion, build core strength and maintain physical fitness. All routines taught in Do It With Ease are designed for those who have had cancer surgery, node dissection, radiation, chemotherapy, or who suffer from chronic fatigue. Designed and led by a physiotherapist.

Gentle Yoga

Description: This is a gentle exercise program for people living with cancer. Experience all the benefits of gentle yoga in a program designed for bodies under stress. Increase vitality, refresh your body mind and spirit and learn gentle, relaxing postures to help reduce stress. Yoga mats, blankets and pillows are provided or you may bring your own. Loose clothing is recommended.

Lymphedema Education and Assessment Program LEAP

Description: This is a lymphedema clinic for members who have developed lymphedema as a result of cancer treatments.  Our goal is to provide accessible early assessment, education, and support for people at risk of, or living with Lymphedema related to a cancer diagnosis.

[accordion title="Yoga for Secondary Arm Lymphedema"]

Description: This is an extremely gentle exercise program for people with, or at risk of, Secondary Arm Lymphedema.  This program is based on the research of Annette Loudon, MMedSC (President of the Australian Association of yoga Therapists) and it is the first time it has been offered in Canada.  This program will help prevent and alleviate the symptoms of lymphedema, teach techniques for coping with the emotional challenges of lymphedema, and provides tips for incorporating lymphedema exercise into your day, a few minutes at a time.  No yoga experience is required and loose clothing is recommended. Yoga mats, blankets and pillows are provided or you may bring your own.

Schedule: No classes for the summer, Lymphedema Yoga will resume in November 2017.  This class is limited to 10 participants, please contact Janette to register.

Aquatic Lymphatic Therapy Program

Description: The Aquatic Lymphatic Therapy Program is designed to teach participants to use the properties of water to assist in the movement of lymphatic fluid in the body.  Dorit Tidhar developed a series of movements and exercises proven to soften and mobilize fluid. It is a powerful tool for the patient who wants to become more active and independent.  This program will be offered once a week for a 6 week cycle in the pool.

Register:  This program is offered twice per year, and is open to any member to has attended the Lymphedema Education and Assessment Program (LEAP) at Hearth Place.  Please call or email Janette@hearthplace.org to inquire about the next session.

Tai Chi

Description: Tai Chi is a gentle moving meditation of body and spirit.  It is a no impact movement class and suitable for all fitness levels.   Pre-registration is required.   A doctor’s note is required to participate.   Tai chi will not be running for July and August but will return in September 2017, please watch our calendar for the start date. 

Walk Club

Description: Enjoy the benefits of walking with the companionship of other members of Hearth Place. Fall and winter walking takes place at the Abilities Centre on Gordon Street in Whitby. Please pre-register through Hearth Place.

Zumba Gold

Description: Zumba is a danced based fitness class suitable for any or all fitness levels.  Our classes are designed specifically for those in treatment of who have recently completed treatment..  It is intended to be a fun and gentle hour  where we can dance and laugh together.  No experience or dance skills are required.

Hearth Beats Choir

Description: Nurture your way to wellness through song. Singing is a great way to express emotions, exercise your lungs, and develop a sense of community – it is very good therapy and a fun way to meet other Hearth Place members, staff and volunteers. No experience required!

Look Good Feel Better

Description: The Look Good Feel Better program assists women in learning how to manage appearance-related side effects of cancer and its treatments. Workshops provide a safe and supportive environment where women benefit from the support and shared experiences of other women living with cancer, and also have the opportunity to learn makeup tips, hair alternatives, nail and skin care practices and cosmetic hygiene. Look Good Feel Better workshops are delivered by certified cosmetic industry volunteers, together with host site facilities and caring community partners. A program of the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrances Association Foundation.

Sharing Circle For Health and Wellness

Description: The Sharing Circle is an aboriginal approach to holistic health and wellness. Everyone is welcome. It is an opportunity for anyone who wants to share their life experiences and learn from others about holistic health approaches. It is interactive and provides an opportunity to connect with others.

Spiritual in nature, the program addresses the emotional needs of all who participate. If you just want to come and listen that is okay too!

Massage Therapy by appointment

Description: Massage therapy is a hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, specifically, the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage therapy treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body and improves health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Physical function can be developed, maintained and improved and physical dysfunction and pain can be relieved or prevented through the use of massage therapy.

Reflexology by appointment

Description: Foot and hand reflexology is based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all body parts. The physical act of applying specific pressures using thumb, finger and hand techniques, results in stress reduction causing a physiological change in the body.

Reiki by appointment

Description: Reiki is a gentle, vibrational/spiritual, hands-on-healing practice. It involves a light non-invasive touch on your fully clothed body. It is administered in a sitting or lying down position.

Reiki can help:
-Aid in healing illness, injury or trauma -Decrease levels of stress hormones
-Energize your body for days -Give you a sense of harmony and balance
-Improve immune response -Promote overall health and well-being
-Regulate blood pressure / heart rate -Relax you significantly
-Relieve stress, depression and fatigue
-Subjectively improve acute or chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia
-Promote a sense of wellness and relaxation by working with the body’s flow of energy.

Therapeutic Touch by appointment

Description: Therapeutic Touch is a consciously-directed process during which the practitioner uses the hands as a focus to facilitate the healing process. It is administered with the intent to enable people to re-pattern their energy field toward wholeness and health, thereby enhancing the client’s own ability to heal. Therapeutic Touch can be used as a complement to other interventions. Therapeutic Touch can be done with no physical touching, or with light touch on the shoulders, arms and legs. Therapeutic Touch is effective in eliciting a relaxation response, reducing anxiety, changing the perception of pain, facilitating the body’s natural restorative process, bringing about an improved sense of well-being, and providing comfort during distressing circumstances.
